Location:
Alappuzha is a district of immense natural beauty with the Arabian Sea on the West and vast spread of lakes, lagoons and fresh water rivers crisscrossing it. It is referred as the Venice of the East by the old travellers from across the world. The town has a unique place in the maritime history of Kerala because of its proximity to the sea.
Another characteristic of this land is the region called Kuttanad, a land of beautiful green paddy field so it is referred as the rice bowl of Kerala and also it is one of the few places in the world where farming is done below sea level. Alappuzha is also famous for its boat races, houseboat holidays, beaches, marine products and coir industry. Alappusha has grown in importance as a backwater tourist centre, attracting several thousands of foreign tourists each year.
