The most important topographic feature of Peninsular India is the 1400 km long Western Ghats along its western margin stretching from Tapti River to Kanyakumari. The IUCN has identified Western Ghats as one of the 25 biodiversity hotspots on Earth.
Diversity is higher in Southern Western Ghats where the climate is more humid and wetter. Southern Western Ghats is one of India's three richest tropical moist forest areas. The wet evergreen forests of Southern Western Ghats probably has the most complex and species rich vegetation assemblage in the country. Endemism is very high especially in flowering plants, small mammals and amphibians. These stretches of hills are also home to a kaleidoscope of peoples and cultures.
