:: Kuttanad paddy fields

This rice bowl of Kerala is the major granaries of Kerala, where green paddy fields are spread interlaced with enchanting backwaters lead us to the unforgettable sights. Four major rivers in Kerala viz. Pampa , Meenachil, Achnkovil and Manimala flow into Kuttanad.

The main and popular access to get close and explore Kuttanad is the Alappuzha-Changanassery road. This road crosses through the heart of Kuttanad and paves the chance to watch the day-to day life at Kuttanad. The sights of different varieties of birds especially the flocks of parrots hovering in the paddy fields especially those fields with rice stalks in the bloom. You can also watch the black birds in group as a blanket sweeping across the sky in and around Kuttanand and Vembanad Lake nearby is a beautiful sight.

Take a walk near through the numerous canals that crisscross Kuttanad, which are decorated by tall coconut trees swaying in the breeze. These beautiful canals are beautiful and busy with different activities most of the day. You can watch the vendors on simple boats selling vegetables, grocery and fish to the households on the banks of these canals. You can also watch big boats called Kettu Vallams on which goods like coconut husk, rice grains etc. are transported to nearby markets in bulk.

Another sight is the group of quacking ducks in high decibels and moving across the backwaters in large numbers guided by men on small boats. Also you can watch men plying on the backwater; some diving down to the water to collect lime shells from the depths and others fishing with their nets and traditional cane basket called Ottal.

If you are interested, you can taste the local dishes by dropping at the small traditionally built wayside eateries, which are quiet famous for backwater fish delicacies and tapioca. A popular naturally extracted beverage is the toddy, which is available in plenty and enjoyed by many for its specialty.

You can also access to these backwaters through the National Highway-47 from Harippad to Alappuzha and from places like Thiruvalla and Changnassery on the Main Central (MC) Road going through the District of Kottayam.

You can also take round by hiring motorboats, houseboats etc from the boat jetty operated by the government as well as private groups near the KSRTC Bus Station at Alappuzha or else may get through Kidangara, which is on the Alappuzha-Changanassery road. Some other places worth visiting in the Kuttanad area are Nedumudy, Kaavaalam, and Champakulam etc.
